Do large‐scale associations in birds imply biotic interactions or environmental filtering?

چکیده

Aim There has been a wide interest in the effect of biotic interactions on species' occurrences and abundances at large spatial scales, coupled with vast development statistical methods to study them. Still, evidence for whether effects within-trophic-level (e.g. competition heterospecific attraction) are discernible beyond local scales remains inconsistent. Here, we present novel hypothesis-testing framework based joint dynamic species distribution models functional trait similarity dissect between environmental filtering interactions. Location France Finland. Taxon Birds. Methods We estimated species-to-species associations within trophic level, independent main variables (mean temperature total precipitation) common scale (a multivariate spatiotemporal delta model) models. created hypotheses functionality (morphological and/or diet dissimilarity) habitat preferences about sign strength pairwise estimate extent which they result from (competition, filtering. Results Spatiotemporal were mostly positive (80%), followed by random (15%), only 5% negative. Where detected, negative different communities due few species. The relationship association dissimilarity among was negative, fulfils predictions both attraction. Main conclusions showed that processes leading aggregation (mixture seem dominate assembly rules, did not find competition. Altogether, our is beneficial ecological interpretation data covering several decades biogeographical regions.

A family of null models to distinguish between environmental filtering and biotic interactions in functional diversity patterns.

QUESTIONS Traditional null models used to reveal assembly processes from functional diversity patterns are not tailored for comparing different spatial and evolutionary scales. In this study, we present and explore a family of null models that can help disentangling assembly processes at their appropriate scales and thereby elucidate the ecological drivers of community assembly. The Great American Biotic Interchange in birds.

The sudden exchange of mammals over the land bridge between the previously isolated continents of North and South America is among the most celebrated events in the faunal history of the New World. This exchange resulted in the rapid merging of continental mammalian faunas that had evolved in almost complete isolation from each other for tens of millions of years. Yet, the wider importance of l...

Interactions between environmental changes and brain plasticity in birds.

Neurogenesis and neuronal recruitment occur in many vertebrates, including humans. Most of the new neurons die before reaching their destination. Those which survive migrate to various brain regions, replace older ones and connect to existing circuits. Evidence suggests that this replacement is related to acquisition of new information. Therefore, neuronal replacement can be seen as a form of b...

Distinguishing Mediational Models and Analyses in Clinical Psychology: Atemporal Associations Do Not Imply Causation.

PURPOSE A popular way to attempt to discern causality in clinical psychology is through mediation analysis. However, mediation analysis is sometimes applied to research questions in clinical psychology when inferring causality is impossible. This practice may soon increase with new, readily available, and easy-to-use statistical advances. Thus, we here provide a heuristic to remind clinical psy...

Rapid polyvalent screening for largescale environmental Spiroplasma surveys

Surface serology is an important determinant in Spiroplasma systematics. Reciprocal antigen/antibody reactions between spiroplasmas and individual antisera delineate the 38 described groups and species. However, reciprocal serology is impractical for large-scale studies. This report describes a successful, streamlined polyvalent screening approach used to examine isolates from an environmental ...
